Swords, Sandals, Muscles. Monsters and Girls! From the late fifties until the mid-sixties, gladiators roamed the wide wide world of cinema. Produced mainly in Italy, an international feast of dubbed actors and actresses marched through countless epics of mighty splendor. The production budgets for these films were small, but the marketing budgets bulged beyond recognition of anything seen up until that time. The scripts were savage stews of Greco-Roman mythologies, Biblical stories, folk-tales and melodramatic adventures. Alameda TV Brings Them Back From the TombLong gone from theaters and syndicated afternoon home pleasures, Professor Edison J. Nello has resurrected these non-important, unclassic films for Alameda TV. They are offered with the special quality one would expect from forgotten movies in the Public Domain. However, each film has gone through a careful, loving "cinematic reforestation" process under the supervision of Professor Nello, who also provides an insightful introduction to each film. Professor Edison J. NelloViewers of Alameda TV's Monster Island Theater are already familiar with Edison J. Nello. An accomplished actor/writer/director, he has also been characterized as an intellectual-raconteur-scientist-playboy. His long show business career covers a vast distance - from game show host to European art film actor. His pioneering talk show program Night City Beat introduced America to cutting edge topics such as "energy management as an expressionist art form" and "bounty hunting poetry." |
