Get Ready for Childhood
The First 5 Years TV series addresses critical early childhood and learning
issues, including: early bonding and attachment, quality child care, early
literacy, discipline, health and nutrition, and child safety.
Hosted by popular celebrities and featuring well-known child development
experts, these programs present the most up-to-date parenting advice in
an engaging and easy to understand format.
History and Background
This informative six program series was brought to Alameda TV (and is
sponsored) by Alameda Family Services and is funded by First 5 Alameda.
Six Great Programs!
- The First Years Last Forever - January 9
Hosted by Rob Reiner this introductory video provides information on
the importance of bonding, communication, health, nutrition, child care, and other issues
discussed in the video series.
- Your Healthy Baby - January 16
Children's health and nutrition is the focus of this show,
hosted by Phylicia Rashad. Your Healthy Baby discusses the changing health needs of
children as they grow and provides useful information on prenatal care, breastfeeding,
visiting the pediatrician, children's nutritional needs and exercise.
- Safe from the Start - January 23
Host - Gloria Estefan shows parents and caregivers how to keep
children safe from accidental injuries. The video includes information on automobile
child safety seats, toy and gun safety, and provides practical advice to keep children
safe both inside and outside the home.
- Ready to Learn - January 30
Hosted by LeVar Burton and Jamie Lee Curtis, this program stresses
the importance of early literacy and show parents and caregivers how to help young
children develop language skills through everyday activities like talking, singing
and playing.
- Quality Child Care - February 6
Hosted by Maria Shriver, this program focuses on the importance of
finding quality child care. It shows what to look for when choosing a care provider,
whether at a child care center or in a private home.
- Discipline - January 2
Renowned child development expert Dr. T Berry Brazelton explains why
children actually look for behavioral limits. The program shows that a firm but gentle
approach is best and demonstrates useful techniques to promote discipline. Dr.
Brazelton also offers advice to help parents and caregivers manage their own emotions and
avoid using physical punishment.
