Film Notes
A body is floating in the River Seine. Meanwhile, on the banks of that very river,
Mephistopheles strums a mandolin in a puppet opera Faust.
Thus it is hellfire on the miniature stage and on the streets and drawing rooms of Paris,
as low budget master director Edgar G. Ulmer works
film shadows and perspectives to maximum effect.
Before his move to America, Ulmer worked in Germany as an assistant to both Max Rheinhardt
and F.W. Murnau, two of Germany's legendary directors.
