The Plot The PlotBela Lugosi stars as Murder Legendre, a supernatural overlord of the mystic Haitian environs. A rich plantation owner named Charles Beaumount wants the beautiful Madeline Short to become his wife. He is refused. An obsessed Beaumont signs a devil's deal with Legendre for Madeline to become ill and die. However, she will rise again as a zombie love slave. Film NotesIt's Zombie Time in the Old Town Tonight White Zombie was filmed in 1931 by Victor Halperin and it stars Monster Island Theater favorite Bela Lugosi. A landmark in cinema history, White Zombie was the very first zombie movie ever to be filmed. Mr Lugosi was paid the total sum of $500 dollars for his work in this movie. In the 1930s, America was wild over all things tropical. Ocean waves, palm trees. A moonlit beach glowing in a warm night breeze. And zombies appeared on earth - the walking dead and the potent cocktail. The 'Zombie' was invented by Hollywood restaurateur Don the Beachcomber as a cure for hangovers. See our recipe. It was yet another sign that American movies were flowing into the mystic brew that would become Pop Culture. ("A ghostly fortress touches the horizon and ocean waves break softly. Black zombies silhouette the hills, tirelessly and silently working from sunset to dawn. A Voodoo doll takes shape under a knife. Death and flames follow the blade. Round and round and round and falling and falling. The Divine Horsemen had arrived at the doors of CINEMA perception.")
